THE STORY
Originating in the arid thorn-forest wastelands of southern Travancore, the legend of Kalliyankattu Neeli is one of Kerala's most enduring and haunting folk tales.
Born from a story of deep love and broken trust, she became bound to the ancient palmyra palms (karimpana) as an enigmatic, ethereal spirit of the wilderness.
Manifesting amidst the intoxicating scent of pala blossoms, Neeli appears to nocturnal travelers as a mesmerizing vision draped in traditional white, testing the hearts and intentions of those who journey through her desolate realm.
Reaching the height of her spectral presence during the mystic seventh watch of the night (ezham yaamam), her lore endures as a captivating symbol of eternal sorrow, enchanting illusion, and the untamed supernatural mysteries of Malayalam folklore.
